Kirkland Protein Bars: Cookies & Cream Nutrition Facts and Are They Healthy?
Short answer
Per 60 g bar, the Kirkland Signature Cookies & Cream protein bar has 170 calories, 22 g of protein, 10 g of fiber, 2 g of sugar and 1.5 g of saturated fat. The nutrition is strong. It is still ultra-processed (NOVA 4), because the protein comes from milk and whey protein isolates and the sweetness from erythritol and stevia. Truvi scores it 58 out of 100.

Kirkland protein bar nutrition facts: are they healthy?
On the numbers, yes, for a protein bar. Here is one 60 g bar, from the label data in Open Food Facts:
| Calories | 170 |
|---|---|
| Protein | 22 g |
| Fiber | 10 g |
| Sugar | 2 g |
| Saturated fat | 2 g |
| Salt | 0.4 g |
The good part: 22 g of protein and 10 g of fiber for 170 calories, with 2 g of sugar and 1.5 g of saturated fat. That is why the nutritional quality part of the score is high, at Nutri-Score A on our calculation. Nutri-Score is the A to E nutrition grade used on packs in Europe.
Compared with many bars on the same shelf, the saturated fat is low. There is no palm oil; the fat comes from cashew butter and coconut oil, about 4 g per bar.
The weaker part is how it is made. Large reviews of the research link diets high in ultra-processed food with higher risks of heart disease deaths and type 2 diabetes (Lane et al., BMJ, 2024). Those studies are observational and about the overall diet, not about one bar now and then.
What's in a Kirkland protein bar
The label lists 13 ingredients. They fall into four groups, and each group explains one thing the bar is known for.
- Protein. milk protein isolate, whey protein isolate and whey protein concentrate. These are proteins separated out of milk in a factory, and they are why one bar has 22 g of protein.
- Fiber and bulk. dietary fiber from tapioca starch, plus tapioca starch. This is where most of the 10 g of fiber comes from, and it gives the bar its chewy body.
- Sweetness without much sugar. erythritol, a sugar alcohol, and steviol glycosides from the stevia plant. Together they keep sugar at 2 g per bar.
- Fat, taste and texture. cashew butter, coconut oil, cocoa processed with alkali, natural flavors and sea salt, held together with sunflower lecithin. Calcium carbonate is a mineral that adds calcium.
Why it counts as ultra-processed
NOVA is the food-processing scale used in nutrition research. Group 4, ultra-processed, covers foods made mostly from ingredients you would not cook with at home. The researchers who created NOVA name whey protein and casein as typical markers, along with sweeteners such as stevia-derived compounds, flavors and emulsifiers (Monteiro et al., 2019).
This bar has several of those, so it sits in group 4 even though its nutrition looks good. NOVA looks at how a food is made, not at its nutrients. That is why the Truvi score lands in the middle: high marks for nutrition, low marks for processing.
The additives worth knowing about
Erythritol (E968)
A sugar alcohol used as a sweetener. A 2023 study found that people with higher blood levels of erythritol had more heart attacks and strokes over the following three years (Witkowski et al., Nature Medicine, 2023). The people studied were patients already being checked for heart disease, and the study is observational: it shows a link, not proof that erythritol is the cause.
Steviol glycosides (E960)
Sweeteners purified from the stevia leaf, 200 to 400 times sweeter than sugar. The FDA has not questioned their GRAS (generally recognized as safe) status for the high-purity forms.
Sunflower lecithin (E322)
An emulsifier that keeps fat and water mixed. The European Food Safety Authority found no safety concern at current use levels in its 2017 review.
Calcium carbonate (E170)
A mineral, the same compound as chalk and many calcium supplements. Here it adds calcium and helps the texture.
Is there a better protein bar?
Not on our list right now. Truvi's swap search found no protein bar in our US list with a complete label that scores clearly higher than this one, so we don't suggest a swap. If you want a bar that is not ultra-processed, look for one made mostly from nuts, seeds or dates without protein isolates or sweeteners, and scan it in the store.
