What's in Triscuit Hint of Salt

Three ingredients, in this order:

  • Whole grain wheat. the main ingredient. Triscuits are made from shredded whole wheat, which gives them their woven look and most of their fiber.
  • Canola oil. a little oil for texture and taste.
  • Sea salt. less of it than in many crackers, which is the point of the Hint of Salt version.

There are no flavorings, sweeteners, emulsifiers or preservatives on this label.

Why it is processed but not ultra-processed

NOVA, the food-processing scale used in nutrition research, puts foods made by adding oil, salt or sugar to a whole food in group 3, processed foods. Freshly made bread, cheese and canned vegetables sit in the same group.

Group 4, ultra-processed, is for foods built from industrial ingredients such as protein isolates, modified starches, sweeteners, flavors and emulsifiers. None of those are in this box, so it stays in group 3.

Are Triscuits healthy?

For a packaged cracker they do well. Here is one 28 g serving, from the manufacturer's label:

Per serving (28 g)
Calories120
Protein3 g
Fiber3 g
Sugar0 g
Saturated fat0 g
Salt0.1 g

The good part: whole grain wheat, 3 g of fiber and 3 g of protein per serving, no sugar and very little salt. That is why the nutritional quality part of the score is close to the top, at Nutri-Score A on our calculation.

The weaker part: like all crackers they are dry and calorie-dense, at about 4.3 calories per gram. They are easy to keep eating, so the fillingness part of the score is low. Pairing them with cheese, hummus or vegetables makes a snack that holds you longer.

Check the box you buy

The Triscuit range has many versions, and their labels differ. In our database, another Hint of Salt box lists vegetable oil (soybean or canola) instead of canola oil, and a Reduced Fat box notes that BHT, a preservative, is added to the packaging material to keep the crackers fresh.

The flavored versions usually have longer ingredient lists. If you want the simple three-ingredient cracker, read the label before you buy, or scan it.

Is there a better cracker?

Not by much. Among the crackers in Truvi's US list, none scores clearly higher than this one, so we don't suggest a swap.
